Video game genres: choose your next game

Choose a genre to read its explanation, popular titles, compatible platforms and references on a separate page.

Shooters / FPS

Aiming, movement and team coordination shape matches. FPS games show the action through the character’s eyes; other shooters use a third-person camera.

Many players enter a map, gather equipment and survive as the safe zone shrinks. The last player or team standing wins.

How to read popularity

“Most played” depends on the measurement. [1] is a snapshot of concurrent Steam users; [2] and [3] report monthly active users in Newzoo’s tracked markets. We select examples by genre from these lists; this is not a worldwide ranking within every genre. Downloads, sales and revenue are not player counts.

Steam activity covers only that store, not the console or mobile audience. [2] places Fortnite first on console in August; [3] places Minecraft and Roblox second and third on PC in July. Periods and metrics are different.

Understand the platforms

PC identifies the desktop operating systems listed in each row. Android and iOS identify mobile apps. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and PS5, and Switch and Switch 2 are different generations. Where only PS4 or Xbox One is listed, that is the referenced edition; compatibility on a newer console does not make it a native version. Cloud streaming and Remote Play are not counted as native mobile versions.

Mobile is a platform, not a genre. In this guide you can find mobile options in battle royale, sandbox, simulation and sports. Check the store for your region and device: availability on two platforms does not automatically mean cross-play, shared purchases or shared progress.

PUBG’s console service moved to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in November 2025. Do not use older platform lists to assume it still runs on PS4 or Xbox One. Official notice
